Last updated October 2026 — this policy covers the iOS app Residual only. The website has its own privacy policy; for the other apps see Interim, Pensum, Aquifer and Nadir.

Residual is a calculator. Your calculations live as lines on sheets, stored on the device. There is no user account and no registration.
The app contains no analytics or tracking libraries, no ad networks and no third-party libraries. There is no server of ours — there is nowhere the app could send data to us.
The app makes exactly two outbound connections, neither of them to us: the exchange-rate download from the European Central Bank (section 5) and, if you turn it on, syncing your sheets through your own iCloud account (section 4). Each is described in its own section.
On the device: your sheets with their calculation lines, labels and titles, your settings (appearance, thousands separator, angle unit, chosen accent colour, keyboard page) and the cached rate table. The files live in the app's own area (“Application Support”) and are not readable by other apps.
What goes into a line is entirely up to you. A label such as “Rent” or “Salary” can carry personal meaning — which is why it stays on the device like everything else.
A small extract (the most recently edited sheet and the accent colour) is additionally kept in an area shared by the app and its widget (“app group”), so the home-screen widget shows the same state. That area is on the device too.
Residual syncs your sheets between your devices when an iCloud account is signed in on the device. It uses only the private database of your own iCloud account (container iCloud.de.goswami.residual, CloudKit). One record per sheet is stored, holding the sheet as JSON, its title and the time it was last changed. The data therefore sits in your Apple account, not with us; we have no access to that area and no way to see it.
There is no switch for it in the app, because there is nothing to switch: either an account is there or it is not. You control syncing in iOS Settings under Apple ID → iCloud, where you can turn it off for Residual or sign out altogether. The app shows the current state under Settings → iCloud-Sync.
The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR: syncing is the function you expect when using more than one device. Apple is the controller for processing in iCloud; Apple's privacy policy applies.
Without iCloud the app works in full. With no account signed in, syncing simply does not happen; everything else is unchanged.
For currency conversion Residual downloads the daily reference rates of the European Central Bank from www.ecb.europa.eu. As with any request on the internet, your IP address is transmitted to the ECB. What happens to it there is governed by their privacy policy; we learn nothing about it.
The file contains nothing but rates and a date. Nothing of yours is sent along — no identifier, no calculation, no amount, no device characteristic. The download happens at most once per rate day and is cached on the device; offline, the app keeps calculating with the last state it has and says so.
The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (providing the function you asked for), in the alternative Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in current rates.
Residual can take line items off a receipt. To do that it opens the iOS document scanner; camera access only takes effect once you confirm it in the iOS dialog (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, withdrawable at any time in iOS Settings).
Text recognition runs entirely on the device (Apple's Vision framework). The capture is not saved to your photos, not stored in the app and not transmitted anywhere; it stays in memory and is gone as soon as you close the sheet. Only the numbers you accept end up on a sheet.
The feature is on by default — but on only means the button appears on the sheet. The camera is requested only when you press it. You can switch the feature off under Settings → Eingabe → Beleg fotografieren, and then the button never appears.
The app does not touch the microphone, speech recognition or your photo library — it requests no permission for any of them.
Residual suggests titles for a sheet. The suggestions are built from the sheet's own labels; on devices with Apple Intelligence, Apple's on-device language model is used as well. It runs on the device, not in the cloud; nothing is sent to us or to any third party for it. Without that support, the rule-based suggestion is what you get.
A sheet can be exported as a PDF, as a .residual file (JSON) or as plain text. The file is created on the device and handed to the iOS share sheet — where it goes from there is entirely your decision. We upload nothing, and there is nowhere for it to be uploaded to.
The other way round, you can open a .residual file you received through Files, AirDrop or a mail attachment. It is always loaded as a new sheet and overwrites nothing.
Under Settings → Kaffee spendieren you can support development voluntarily. There are three amounts (Espresso, Doppelter, Eine Kanne); they are tips and unlock nothing. Without a purchase the app remains fully usable and unchanged.
Purchase and billing run entirely through Apple; we receive no payment data and do not learn who bought anything. On the device the app only remembers how many cups have added up. “Käufe wiederherstellen” asks Apple for that figure again.
Individual sheets are deleted in the sheet browser. Remove Residual from the device and all app data goes with it. If you had iCloud syncing on, delete the copy held there in iOS Settings under Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Storage.
Apple is responsible for download, billing and iCloud. If you use your device's iCloud backup, it may include app data; Apple's privacy policy applies to that. We have no access to it.
You are reading this page over the internet. It is hosted by Vercel Inc., 340 S Lemon Ave #4133, Walnut, CA 91789, USA, which produces server log files (IP address, time, page requested, amount of data transferred, referrer, browser, operating system). The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. A data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is in place with Vercel; the transfer to the USA relies on the Standard Contractual Clauses and Vercel's certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. The website privacy policy covers this in full.
There is no automated decision-making, including profiling, with legal effect (Art. 22 GDPR). You are under no legal or contractual obligation to provide us with personal data. Recipients of data are solely our hosting provider Vercel as a processor and — for downloads, tipping and iCloud — Apple as a separate controller; for the rate download the European Central Bank is a separate controller as well.
You have the right of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21 GDPR). Consent you have given — for the camera, for instance — can be withdrawn at any time with effect for the future in iOS Settings. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for us is: Die Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Niedersachsen, Prinzenstraße 5, 30159 Hannover, Germany, www.lfd.niedersachsen.de.
Right to object: where we process data on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, you may object at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21 GDPR).
